one of my classes (RE) evolved into talking about capital punishment, and it seemed many people agreed with it and wanted it back. but only for the most horrible of criminals! only if its specific and true and accurate and for real monsters! i didnt say anything cos i was too tired but everytime i shook my head vehemently and sighed and thought about the points they were making.
i have thought about this before, many times. i know what the world is, i know the death penalty exists and is wrong often and also bad. also i like pirates, of course i've thought about it. whats something which occurs frequently in relation to pirates??? hanging. hanging like a dog. drying in the sun. being sent to the gallows. One of my favorite quotes ever is from captain Charles Johnson's A General History apparently said by a pirate while stood on the chats with a rope round his neck:"i do heartily repent. i repent i had not done more mischief, that..., and that you aint all hanged as well as us."
I have my thoughts. so let me share them with you
I have three points against capital punishment:

1.

NO ONE DESERVES TO BE KILLED. simple. The simplest of my 3 points. no one deserves to die in such a way, and there are two reasons why. firstly, their crime is not severe enough to warrant death. If their crime IS horribly severe, the worst of worst, vile, monstrous, then they do not deserve the freedom of death. they do not deserve the easy way out - they deserve to rot forever and wither away and feel themselves dying, nice and slow. They should suffer as they have made others suffer.
very simple, and not my main point.

2.

THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT HAVE THAT POWER. it doesnt matter how accurate the goverment is when convicting criminals and sending them to their death. it doesnt matter if they are always accurate and only kill the very worst. they shouldnt hold this power. they shouldnt be able to KILL PEOPLE LEGALLY. because the thing is, nothing which exists in human society ever stays stagnant for ever. everything changes, always. so it doesnt matter how well it is done, it doesnt matter how narrow and specific the law is, because it will change. it will be taken advantage of, it will shift. it doesnt matter. it will. ALSO THE GOV JUST SHOULDN'T KILL PEOPLE LIKE YEA OBVIOUSLY.

3.

IT DOES NOT FIX ANYTHING. IT IS AN ILLUSION. i have a good metaphor for this one.
tree with poisonous fruit. dont cut off fruit; dont cut off branches; dont even cut the tree where it meets the ground; you rip out the roots, no seeds in ground. *dont just kill people. it looks like the problem is fixed, but it has just gone from sight. something is sprouting the poisonous fruit, something in society in systems, even personal situations, and so that is what you fix; be rid of the tree which bears poisonous fruit, and replant something edible and healthy, an orange tree how about. put better systems in place, so people are in better situations &c. &c.
